I think that we are given a lot of information in the Bible about what is really in us. We are corrupted, we are far from perfect. We need to be careful, keep our distance from one another. Try to do good but still realize that if we see short comings or cruelty in others, it is surely in ourselves. As Jesus said, 'take out the rafter in our own eye and we will see how to take out the rafter in our brother's eye. Each person must do it for themselves. We should not presume that we can do it for our brother.
